About Kate

Kate Doig
I started my training in acrylics and watercolour. My first encounter with glass was in 1997 while studying at Eastbourne College of Arts and Technology in Sussex, England. On moving to Somerset I was able to combine my glass skills with that of metal and forge work at Bridgwater College. I continued my studies in Architectural Glass at Bristol School of Art which introduced me to the variety of techniques I use in my work today, namely: fusing, slumping, acid etching, and the use of paints, stains, and enamels. I now work from my studio at home in beautiful Somerset at the foot of the Quantock hills.

I love the relationship glass has with light. The ideas I have for particular windows or hanging art pieces are influenced by their position in relation to the Four Directions. The amount and quality of light they receives is paramount to the design. Even the glass itself is influencial. Many of the pieces, being handmade ‘one offs’, are unique in their pattern, texture and colour. Everything has to be considered. The window becomes a part of its surroundings, almost a living thing, changing and reacting to what is around it, to the time of day, to the Seasons, to the Elements.

I am passionate about my art and every piece has a story. My work reflects my connection with nature and the elements as well as my interest in folklore. I love using animals in my work and enjoy researching fables and old folklore to add interest to the pieces. I particularly enjoy designing individual pieces of work to celebrate important events such as weddings, hand-fastings, naming ceremonies or just beautiful pieces to treasure.

There is also an unpredictability and fragility about glass which I find fascinating and which attracts me, particularly when it is subjected to fiery energies of the kiln. I find this art form inspirational, challenging, absorbing, draining, stimulating, and deeply satisfying.

I hope you enjoy my work.
